The Firm
Robert Mitchell and Donald Ching founded Mitchell-Ching in Saskatoon in 1979. Over the years, the firm underwent several name changes. In 1999, the firm changed its name to Woloshyn & Company.
Over the years, the firm has evolved through the coming and going of numerous prominent and successful Saskatchewan lawyers. Many partners have gone on to successful careers in government, business, and the judiciary.
Bob Mitchell, founding partner, left the firm and from 1986 to 1999, he was the MLA for the Saskatoon Fairview Constituency. From 1991 to 1998, he was a Saskatchewan Cabinet Minister serving in various portfolios, including Minister of Justice, Minister of Labour, Minister of Post Secondary Education, Minister of Indian and Métis Affairs, Minister responsible for Constitutional Negotiations and Minister responsible for various Boards and Commissions. As the Minister responsible for Constitutional Negotiations, Mr. Mitchell was involved with the Charlottetown Accord negotiations, the successor to the Meech Lake Accord. Since 1999, he has been the Chief Negotiator at the Governance Table for Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and the Chair of 90 grievance arbitration boards. He is currently the chair of the office of the Saskatchewan Police Complaints Investigator.
Don Ching, founding partner, went on to become the President and CEO of the Saskatchewan Provincial Crown Investment Corporation and then later became the President and CEO of Sasktel. He is currently the President and CEO of COGEMA Resources Inc. of AREVA group.
George Taylor was a partner for 10 years, after arriving at the firm as a well-established and nationally known labour lawyer. Roy Romanow left the firm to become the Premier of Saskatchewan. Eric Cline left to become the Minister of Justice, and is the Minister of Industry and Resources and the Minister Responsible for Investment Saskatchewan Inc., and Minister Responsible for Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan. Five lawyers accepted appointments on the bench; three are Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench justices while two are judges of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan.
We are also proud of the fact that the ratio of female lawyers to male lawyers at the firm has remained well above the standard for law firms in Western Canada for several years- it is currently just below fifty per cent. We stand well above the norm with a fifty percent ratio of women to men in the partnership.
Throughout our nearly thirty year history the firm has maintained many solid relationships representing a wide spectrum of interests within the first nations, labour, business, municipal, provincial, and national communities. Both founding partners wished to succeed in the practice of law by emphasizing quality, professional legal services to their clients and as we approach our 30th anniversary, in 2009, their commitment remains our cornerstone.
